I have two children. One is six and the other will turn three in a couple months. I allow both of them to watch TV as well as shows on the iPad. Here are my rules for their viewing.

It must be age-appropriate
My children know they can only watch shows for kids. They’re very good about this anyway because they find grown-up shows to be boring.

Time limits are enforced
I work from home so when I’m really busy, I will often hand over the iPad in order to complete tasks without interruptions. But even I need a break and during that time, I take my kids outside for a walk or over to the playground. I like to show them that life is more than just sitting glued to a piece of technology.

No TV or iPad unless chores are completed
Messy room? I confiscate all devices and the TV remote until things are cleaned to my satisfaction. I also revoke allowance if my daughters don’t keep up with their chores. They know that if they want to watch something, they’ll have to obey the rules.

Encourage play outside of devices
I always make sure to involve the kids in games and activities that force them to play together instead of vacantly staring at a screen. They have fun and they learn to appreciate TV shows instead of using them to fill a void.
